The Salmon Knowledge Hub (SKH) is a collaborative initiative that brings together Yukon First Nations, universities, NGOs, and other partners to support the resurgence of Yukon salmon culture and stewardship. Co-led by the Council of Yukon First Nations and Yukon University, the SKH supports action-based research and community-led monitoring that braid Indigenous and Western knowledge systems.
A key focus of the SKH is the Annual Salmon Ceremony and Gatherings—land-based events hosted with Yukon First Nations that center Indigenous teachings and culture. These gatherings offer space for intergenerational learning and cultural revitalization, especially during years when salmon fishing is restricted. Through song, story, ceremony, art, and technical dialogue, they strengthen connections between people, salmon, and place.
The SKH also supports applied research projects that reflect the priorities of Yukon First Nations. These include salmon habitat restoration, responses to climate change, and youth-led advocacy. Students and emerging scholars are supported through research partnerships and skill-building opportunities aligned with Indigenous knowledge-sharing protocols.
The SKH promotes Indigenous data sovereignty by upholding First Nations ownership and control of knowledge and research outcomes. All knowledge shared is protected by First Nations protocols, and partners commit to the OCAP® principles (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession).
Ultimately, the SKH strengthens Yukon First Nations’ role in decision-making, supporting both salmon conservation and the well-being of Indigenous communities for generations to come.
