Our History

The History of Braiding Knowledges Canada

Launched in 2019 with the generous support of the Government of Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program, the Canadian Mountain Network (CMN) was the first national research network of its kind to directly fund Indigenous organizations to lead projects, and to acknowledge that Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Holders hold the role of Principal Investigator.

CMN’s Mission

Support the resilience and health of Canada’s mountain peoples and places through research partnerships based on Indigenous and Western ways of knowing that inform decision-making and action.

CMN funded 35 initiatives across Canada, including seven innovative Knowledge Hubs, 17 place-based research projects and 11 Strategic Initiatives.
BKC now expands beyond Canadian mountain regions as a natural evolution building upon the successes of CMN. While honouring and continuing to support CMN’s original focus on place-based and Indigenous-knowledge research, BKC will follow the waters from the mountains to the coasts, towards the opportunity to share and learn with a larger and more diverse group of Canadian researchers, trainees, and knowledge users.
