The goal of the Guardians Program is to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor and steward Chemawawin\u2019s lands, waters, and resources. The Nation\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connection to the land and waters was disrupted in 1962 when the Grand Rapids <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydro Project caused devastating flooding, forcing the community to relocate from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traditional settlements (Old Post) to Chemawawin 2. This displacement profoundly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impacted our community, destroying our home, our livelihoods, and the connection to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the land we have had since Time Immemorial. Today, Chemawawin Cree Nation is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reasserting its jurisdiction over its lands, waters, and resources through the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deployment of Guardians to make observations, collect ecological samples, and track <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change in our territory. With this initiative, Chemawawin members will have a critical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">role to play in protecting our lands and waters. This broader initiative is being funded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a number of sources, involving training, equipment procurement, salaries for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guardians and technicians, database development, administrative design, GIS analysis <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and mapping, and other activities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project provides an opportunity to enhance this Guardians work by including a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cree Place Naming component for the Guardians. There are numerous benefits to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pursuing this work as part of the Guardians program. First, it presents a reasonably <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low barrier of entry for a technician in the field learning to use the systems. Whereas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more technical functions are expected (such as collecting water samples), place<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">name data collection involves visiting a site, taking an observation, and bringing that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">observation back to the community to be uploaded to the database. Second, place <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naming requires the involvement of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and will provide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an opportunity for members to be connected to the work of the Guardians. Third, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development of Cree placenames for the territory is an important way to assert Cree<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0j<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urisdiction over the land, making it possible to tie Guardians observations, reporting, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other activities to locations that may have Cree stories or etymologies that link<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our people to the land. Additionally, many names are anticipated to be included for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">places that have been lost. This helps our people to remember the significance of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">displacement and what has been
