The relationship to the land, air and water guides teachings on how to trap, hunt, fish, gather medicines and practice the M\u00e9tis way of life. This connection is central to M\u00e9tis identity, and the M\u00e9tis National Council (MNC) plays a national and international role in advocating for policy advancement and investment in initiatives that strengthen this relationship through self-determined M\u00e9tis nature and conservation priorities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the &#8220;Honouring Kinship &amp; Knowledge Sharing to Advance M\u00e9tis Nature Priorities\u201d Initiative, the MNC will support the launch and implementation of a national strategy for nature and conservation that has been co-developed with MNC\u2019s Governing Members, Elders and Youth, host a first of its kind Knowledge Sharing Summit, create several new relationships and formalize a select few with signed partnership agreements, and generate collaborative research and resources using braided knowledge systems that support nature and conservation policy and actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will be strongly rooted in self-determined nature priorities, and in four key M\u00e9tis concepts and teachings: <strong>Wahkohtowin, Otipemisiwak, Miyo-pimatishiwin, and Kiyokewin<\/strong>. This grounding will ensure the project advances in a good way, and strong relationships are developed to last far beyond the project\u2019s timeframe.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb66da8 about-links elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fb66da8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wahkohtowin (kinship):<\/strong> a Cree word that encompasses M\u00e9tis ideals of being related to each other and to all life or all of creation. It is a worldview that connects the values of reciprocity, support and decency to be honoured in the relationships with our kin. This project will honour this concept and weave it into all the work described above to share knowledge across kinship ties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Otipemisiwak (self-determination)<\/strong>: a Cree word given to the M\u00e9tis people meaning \u201cthe people who own themselves\u201d. A powerful concept of self-determination, Otipemisiwak is deeply connected to the economic and political history of the M\u00e9tis Nation. This project will seek to honour the principles of self-determination when advancing M\u00e9tis nature and conservation priorities.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Miyo-pimatishiwin (the good life)<\/strong>: Living \u201cthe good life\u201d is a lifelong endeavor to balance the heart, body, mind and spirit. This project will implement the teaching of Miyo-pimatishiwin by caring for one another as human beings involved in the project and committing to always build relationships in a good way. The project will seek to ensure that everyone involved has a voice, feels hopeful, has the capacity to be an active participant and feels honoured and respected in the work we do together.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Kiyokewin (the visiting way)<\/strong>: Kiyokewin is a way in which M\u00e9tis people connect and shape community and relationships with each other, and with the land. M\u00e9tis thought leaders note that spending time and visiting is practical, social, political and spiritual and strengthens and deepens relationships in ways that aren\u2019t possible without investing that time and attention.
