research project seeks to communicate the value, contribute to the protection, and inform socio-ecological management of isolated uplands located in the plains and prairies. This research project focuses on twenty island highlands that are hills or small mountains present in otherwise flat plain or prairie landscapes, systematically selected by overlying a global mountain classifier with Canadian ecozones identified as plains or prairies

The title of this project – Hills Thought to be Mountains – acknowledges the ambiguity of what is and is not a mountain, as well as literature and knowledge focused on thinking about and like mountains (Leopold 1949, Freudenburg et al. 1995, Brayboy et al. 2012). The project seeks to bridge disciplinary approaches focused primarily on people (health and social sciences, humanities), biodiversity (life sciences) and physical landscapes (physical sciences) by considering and emphasizing the many connections and co-dependencies linking human well-being, natural systems, and biodiversity. We use the word geobiocultural to emphasize the inclusion of land, life , and people in the project. The term biocultural has been used elsewhere to acknowledge the connections between nature, culture, and well-being, through the lens of relationships between human and other-than-human life, rooted in place-based cultural perspectives, values, and knowledge systems (Vaziri et al. 2020). But we wondered whether the mountains and the hills themselves got a little lost in the word biocultural. Reflecting our disciplinary training, to us, ‘geo’ speaks to the earth and to the mountains, hills, soils, and waters that define island highlands, ‘bio’ speaks to the plants and animals and people that these islands support, and ‘cultural’ to the knowledges, languages, traditions, colonial legacies, livelihoods, and aspirations of people that have been shaped by and continue to shape these places. So geobiocultural it is… a mouthful, but every time we write or say the word, it reminds us to be inclusive in our thinking about land, life, and people.

Island highlands in the continental plains of Canada. A second path, labeled geobiocultural portraits and initiated soon after the first, involves our McGill-based research team preparing a draft geobiocultural portrait of each island highland, from information available in the public domain. This portrait describes the physical highland feature and its geological origins, the biodiversity the highland supports, and the history of its people and their relationships with the highland and its surrounding lowlands. A third path, labeled local knowledge interviews and initiated after completion of a draft geobiocultural portrait is completed, involves reaching out to a diversity of people living on or around these island highlands, who know these island highlands well, to determine if they are willing to share their place-based knowledge with us, to help us better understand the place, to improve our draft geobiocultural portrait, and to better inform our upland vs. lowland comparisons. A fourth path, which we have labeled community training, research, & education experience and will initiate according to recommendations received during local knowledge interviews, involves identifying a local youth, 18-35 years of age, who can be employed to conduct additional interviews, revise the geobiocultural portrait, secure additional information layers to advance with the geospatial analysis. A fifth path, which we have labeled place-based workshops and would initiate only if strong local support emerges through the community research coordinator and from the local knowledge interviews, would involve multi-perspective knowledge integration and application workshops focused on the resilience and health of the twenty highlands, as understood through Indigenous and Western ways of knowing about topics intended to inform decision making and action. These five paths all co-inform each other with the overall goal being an well-integrated, co-produced, and place-based understanding of the values and action-oriented priorities for each highland feature.

  <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-a837cec e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child" data-id="a837cec"
